South East governors set up economic forum

The south east governors under the aegis of the South East Governors Forum in furtherance of their commitments have constituted a ten man committee which would be called the economic team.

Chairman of the forum and governor of Ebonyi state, Dave Umahi who made this known while briefing journalists at the end of their meeting held at the Enugu state government house , said the committee would be inaugurated at their next meeting scheduled to hold on the 4th of June, 2017.

The governors also discussed extensively about the economic agenda for the south east especially in the areas of commerce, rail transport, and sea port which according to them, would be referred to the economic team for preliminary study and final presentation at the next meeting.

The governors would as well interface with south east economic cooperation with the expectation to finding areas of cooperation and the necessary assistance that would be given to the forum.

Governor Umahi noted that the Bank of Industry BOA whom the governors are interfacing with, is very crucial in the agriculture programme of the south east while noting that the anchor borrower scheme of the Central Bank was being handled by the BOA.

The governors also deliberated on power generation and distribution in the south east which is the catalyst for development of the region, by inviting a team of geometrics who set up an independent power plant in Aba, Abia state to make recommendations on how to improve on power distribution in the south east to assist in the areas of cement production and the railway project.

The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, EEDC was not left out on the discussions by the governors as they promised to interact with the EEDC to find out what challenges they face and find a lasting solution to power generation and distribution in the south east.

Finally the governors have opened discussions with the Department For International Development, DFID as a way of finding out their intentions for the south east region of Nigeria.
