The Medical Director of Alimosho General Hospital, Igando, Dr. Madewa Adebajo, has said that pre-surgery procedures are vital to keeping patients emotionally stable before surgeries are conducted.

Speaking at the continuous medical education forum organised by the State government for hospital clinicians , Dr. Adebajo stated that adequate pre-surgery assessment proffers a vital tool to ensure patients are acquainted with methods applicable in surgeries, implications of such measures being applied and information to aid their recuperation.

He reiterated that patients should not be rushed for procedures but should rather be properly educated on the process involved, prior to every surgery, as such gesture would enhance the success of the operation.

Also speaking at the event, Dr. Ayoola Adebola of the Anaesthesia Department said, “A safe and successful surgical procedure is determined by the patients’ emotional status before surgery. Hence, it is pertinent to assess the metabolic state as well as the respiratory condition, with a view to informing the patient of proceedings to ward-off agitation; the communication is better conducted in a language which the patient understands well”.

He observed that most patients get frightened from lack of information, yet more aggravated by medical procedures they are not acquainted with.

Adebola said the continuous medical education programme is a medium employed by the hospital to ensure all its personnel, regardless of their area of specialty, engage in pre-surgery counselling of patients for well executed and successful surgeries.

“Regardless of your specialty, everyone is needed in pre-operative processes for well-executed successful procedures” he said.
