The Nigerian government says it has successfully included Professional Standards for Nigeria Teachers, PSNT, in its curriculum for colleges of education across the country.

The Registrar of the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria TRCN, Professor Josiah Ajiboye, made this known in Abuja at the review of the document on Professional Standards for Nigeria Teachers.

The TRCN Registrar stressed that the document review as part of implementation of the National Teacher Policy and the Target 4 of the Sustainable Development Goals was aimed at achieving a sustainable quality education system nationwide.

According to him: “The Professional Standards for Nigerian Teachers encapsulate what a professional must know and put into practice as well as the core values, ideals and conduct of that the professional teacher must exhibit. In his words”

“The Professional Standards covered four major themes which include Professional Knowledge, Professional skills, Professional values, attitudes and conduct; and the Professional membership obligation,” Prof Ajiboye added.

The TRCN Registrar informed participants that Teachers Standards is one of the key dimensions that is considered crucial to any education policy.

“It is in view of this as a national benchmark document that TRCN has selected distinguished experts from the education agencies; critical stakeholders, teacher education institutions and International Development Partners to carry out the review.”

The TRCN Boss emphasized that with consistent review of the PSNT to meet recent demand, Nigeria will have a Professional Standards for Nigerian Teachers that will meet the nation’s educational needs and serve as a model for other teaching Regulatory bodies in Africa.

Also addressing participants at the Teachers Professional Standards review workshop was the Emeritus Professor Adamu Baikei, the Chairman, TRCN Governing Council, who applauded Professor Josiah Olusegun Ajiboye, the TRCN Boss, for his record breaking initiatives which have gone a long way in enhancing teacher quality and Standards in the nation’s education system.

The Chairman of TRCN Governing Council said the decision to review the Professional Standards for Nigerian Teachers was a move in the right direction, he added that the review came after 10 years of the first edition of the document. (VON)
