Nigeria’s Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, has called on education stakeholders  to evolve better teaching and learning techniques that will address contemporary challenges confronting the society.

Prof. Osinbajo stated this on Monday, receiving a delegation from the West African Examination Council, WAEC, led by its Chairperson, Dr Evelyn Kandakai at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Professor Osinbajo said it had become imperative for young people to be more entrepreneurial in their approach to everything.

He said “it is interesting that we have found ourselves, especially those of us in this part of the world at this time, trying very hard to work out educational systems that are relevant to our people.” 

He added that the initial contributions in the education sector were inherited from colonial times, pointing out that present realities dictate that countries should chart their own course in education.

He said the focus of educators should be on the kind of subjects and the kind of teachings that challenge critical thinking, making the youth more creative as well as opening their minds to think outside the box.

“It is even more so now than ever before with technology, there is a need for us to meet the requirements of our people,” the vice-president said, charging educators to find solutions to society’s contemporary challenges.

He noted that the responsibility of the political class was to throw the challenge to the educators and hope that they would be able to give some form of direction as to where the society should be heading.

The Vice President commended the present WAEC Council and management for maintaining the institution’s status, standards and quality as the foremost sub-regional examination body for many decades.
