Graduating Students of Veritas University at the Institutions 7th Convocation ceremony
Stakeholders in the Nigerian Education Sub-sector have called for freedom for universities in the country to device their areas of specialty of studies.

The Chancellor and the Chairman Board of Trustees of Veritas University, John Cardinal Onaiyekan made the call in Abuja during the university’s 7th Convocation ceremony.

Cardinal Onaiyekan applauded the National Universities Commission NUC, for maintaining standards and what he called good order but said the idea of “forcing” all universities into the same pattern will not benefit the country.

According to him, “we have always insisted that its not of use having all universities doing exactly the same thing, we are talking about diversification of universities,it should mean that we have different kinds of Universities”

“We have been pursuing this, it is good that there is NUC trying to maintain good order & trying to maintain standard but my convinced opinion is that  it is not helping us to try and squeeze email into the same pattern”

He added that there should be a margin of freedom for all universities to device their own way of going about their things.

John Cardinal Onaiyekan hinted that his University already have a centre on peace studies and resolution called on more universities to join in establishing centres for peace studies adding that without peace nothing else work in a country.

” I don’t think any universities in Nigeria should ignore the issue of peace studies ,veritas university already started a centre on it,I am passionate about peace and everybody I believe should be because without peace nothing else works”

Similarly, the Pro-chancellor and Chairman of  Council of Veritas University, Most Reverend Godfrey Onah, said provision of proper funding for quality education is critical for the advancement of any country.

“The first step towards building a society that is just,fair, patriotic,detribalised and peaceful is to properly educate the people , especially the youths ,to understand the essence and commitment required for nation building”.

“We cannot as a nation hope to rid Nigeria of the ills of ethnicity, corruption,insecurity, poverty without expanding access to quality education with right morals and spiritual contents”he added.

Meanwhile, the Executive Secretary of National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Abubakar Rasheed at the Veritas University 7th convocation revealed that the Nigerian university curriculum is currently under review to improve the quality of the system and make graduates globally competitive.
