He also directed the pro-chancellor of the school, Wale Babalakin and its sacked vice-chancellor, Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, to recuse themselves from their official duties until the panel concludes its probe.

The governing council headed by Babalakin removed Ogundipe as VC on August 12 and replaced him with Soyombo.

Giving a reason for his action, Soyombo said he stepped down in obedience to the directive of the president.

According to him, he was leaving the position with immediate effect.

He said he was grateful for the support he got from members of staff, the staff unions, alumni and the general public in the past 10 days since his appointment as acting VC.

Soyombo noted that his acceptance of the offer to serve was to restore peace and stability in the school.

He prayed for peace and stability to be restored in the institution. He also advised staff and students to keep going about their activities in a peaceful manner.

Ogundipe’s sack had led to a split in the university community, and the government had to intervene before things got out of hand.

The UNILAG branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) hailed the government’s intervention.
