The National Environmental Standard and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), has raises alarm over Nigeria’s rising solid waste currently at 32 million tons annually.

The Director General, National Environmental Standard and Regulations Enforcement Agency NESREA, Aliyu Jarau revealed at the 11th National Regulatory dialogue on implementation of National Environmental Regulations in Abuja.

It focus on examining the implementation of extended producer responsibility programme in Nigeria, as its challenges and prospects in Nigeria’ while stating that there is need to evolve strategies to achieve effective enforcement and implementation of the programme.

According to him, it is estimated that Nigeria generates more than 32 million tons of solid waste annually, out of which only 20-30% is collected.

The Minister of state, Environment, Sharon Ikeazor said, “This programme bring together lovers of the environment on a single platform to discuss environmental issues.

“It is worthy of note that the agency is implementing the Extended Producers Responsibility EPR being adopted globally as a production model to circular economy.”
