The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) has expressed concerns over the proposed ban on single-use plastics, citing potential economic implications for manufacturers, distributors, retailers, and consumers.

In a statement signed by Director General Segun Ajayi-Kadir, MAN argued that the ban will significantly alter production processes, supply chains, and consumer behaviors.

MAN highlighted the need for a holistic approach to transitioning to a single-use plastics-free future, encompassing innovation, investment, consumer education, and government support.

The association emphasized the importance of balancing environmental concerns with economic considerations, advocating for a phased implementation to allow businesses to adapt and mitigate disruptions.

MAN proposed incentives such as tax breaks to encourage investment in sustainable technologies and comprehensive training programs to equip the workforce with necessary skills.

The association also suggested establishing a dedicated fund to support research and development into sustainable packaging solutions.

MAN expressed concerns about the potential economic implications of the ban, including job losses, business closures, and disruptions to supply chains.

The association noted that small and medium-scale enterprises are particularly vulnerable due to their limited resources and capacity to adapt to rapid regulatory changes.

The statement highlighted the need for a comprehensive and strategic approach to achieve a successful transition, including establishing a robust recycling infrastructure, investing in research and development, and providing technical assistance and capacity-building support to businesses.

MAN emphasized the importance of consumer education and awareness campaigns to promote the benefits of sustainable materials and encourage consumers to adopt new habits.

The association suggested that companies explore opportunities for circular economy initiatives, incorporating recycling, reuse, and repair practices into their business models.
