Magistrate Oluwatoyin Oghere, ordered that Udemba be kept in Ikoyi Prison pending advice from the state director of Public Prosecutions.

Udemba, a resident of Church Street, Badagry, Lagos, is facing a count charge of murder.

The prosecutor, Sergeant Modupe Olaluwoye, told the court that the accused committed the offence on January 11 at 8.30pm at Stay Fine Hotel, KM 47, Lagos-Badagry Expressway.

Olaluwoye said the accused in his shop at Badagry, prescribed abortion drugs for Ugochi Ogbonnaya to enable her get rid of her pregnancy.

 According to the prosecutor, Ogbonnaya later started having a stomach upset and Udemba took her to the hotel to spend the night and left her there.

He added: “That evening, the lifeless body of the deceased was found on the bathroom floor of the hotel.

“She was naked and bleeding through her private part. “She was rushed to Badagry General Hospital by the hotel staff but was confirmed dead on reaching the hospital.

 “My lord, the hotel staff were able to identify the accused as the person who took her to the hotel. “Investigation further revealed that he had carried out an abortion on her.”

The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 222 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State,  2015 (Revised).

The accused’s plea was not taken.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Section 223 stipulates death penalty for murder. Oghere adjourned the case until April 10 for hearing.
