The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has refuted claims circulating on social media suggesting that they approved a herbal product promoting the idea that “smoking is healthy” when used in conjunction with the said product.

According a press statement signed by Sayo Akintola , Resident Media  Consultant NAFDAC   to the agency ,  the product in question, known as Lung Detox Tea or Lungitox (Smokers Pride) or any similar product, is not registered with the agency.

NAFDAC clarified that the individual behind the product had submitted it for registration in 2023, but it was queried at the Lagos Office Directorate (LOD) and was not resubmitted for further processing.

The initial application was questioned due to the unsubstantiated and potentially harmful claim that smoking could be considered “healthy” by using the product.

In adherence to regulatory standards, NAFDAC emphasized that they do not permit the depiction of organs on product artwork and reiterated their commitment to only approving products that are safe, effective, and supported by scientific evidence.

The agency stressed that herbal and related products are prohibited from making therapeutic claims without proper validation through clinical trials.

NAFDAC reaffirmed its dedication to safeguarding public health and upholding rigorous scientific standards in product approvals.

The agency strongly condemned any attempts to mislead or put the public at risk with baseless claims. The public was advised to disregard the circulating video and urged to report any suspicious claims or products to NAFDAC through official channels.
