By Winifred BosaPresident Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Nigeria’s former leader, Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday in a London hospital after an undisclosed illness.
In a heartfelt tribute personally signed by the President, Tinubu described Buhari as a patriot, soldier, and statesman whose life was defined by unwavering dedication to Nigeria’s progress.
“Buhari served Nigeria with steadfast commitment, first as a military leader from January 1984 to August 1985, and later as democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023,” Tinubu stated.
“His life was guided by duty, honor, and a profound belief in our nation’s potential. He stood firm through turbulent times, leading with integrity, discipline, and a focus on national unity.”
The President highlighted Buhari’s firm stance against corruption, his leadership during challenging periods, and his unwavering patriotism.
Tinubu extended his condolences to Buhari’s wife, Aisha, children, the entire Buhari family, and the people of Katsina State, especially the traditional leaders of Daura Emirate.
As a mark of respect, Tinubu ordered that all national flags fly at half-staff across Nigeria for seven days.
An emergency Federal Executive Council meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday to honor Buhari’s memory, and the federal government announced plans to accord him full state honors, recognizing his significant contributions to the nation.
Tinubu reflected on Buhari’s enduring legacy, praying that his life continues to inspire Nigerians to serve with courage, conviction, and selflessness.
