Army Decries Poor South East Youth Enlistment Into Military Service

The Nigerian Army has raised the alarm over the poor enlistment of South East youths into the military service, and called for a change of attitude to reverse the trend.
According to the Army, while Kaduna State had recorded over 3,000 applications in the ongoing 2025 recruitment exercise, Enugu State was still struggling with just a hundred, noting that the story was not different with other South East states.
It called FC numbers in the ongoing 2025 recruitment exercise to fill their quotas.
The Army made the call in Enugu during an enlightenment town hall meeting with Local Government Council Chairmen, traditional rulers, Presidents-General of town unions, and other community and thought leaders at the weekend.
Leader of the 2025 Army Recruitment Enlightenment Team, Brigadier-General Chima Ekeator, said, “Our people are losing what rightly belongs to them. Each year, whenever a slot is being allocated to our people, we keep noticing that the number of applicants from our side is usually very poor.
“Take for example, Enugu State was given about 200 slots, but the people who made it were never up to 100 due to poor application.  This has also become a recurring decimal in other states in the South East.
“Today’s statistics on the number of applicants show that Kaduna has about 3,000 applicants, while Enugu is still battling with about a hundred; and by the time we will be through with screening, you will not have enough to recruit from the state.”
He refuted the allegation that people of South East origin were being killed in their numbers in the Army because they were the first to be sent to the battle fronts. He added that the region was also holding strategic positions in the Army presently.
“There are a lot of falsehoods out there stating that the Igbo are being killed because they are the first to be sent to the battlefield. These things are not true. After all, we that are here have risen high in the Army and we are telling you that they are lies. Today in the Nigerian Army, our brother is one of the top commanders in charge of equipment. His name is Chibueze Ogbuabor,” he said.
Speaking, the Commissioner for Youths and Sports Development, Barr. Lloyd Ekweremadu, regretted that the problem had persisted despite the collective efforts to reverse the trend and called for a review of modes of advertising the opportunities and the need to provide more details about the benefits of serving in the Army.
“While seated here, I was just trying to conduct a very quick research and it appears this same problem is happening worldwide and militaries across the world are deploying more cutting-edge strategies for recruitment because we are talking about the new generation that you communicate in a different way from the past,” he stated.
He reiterated Governor Peter Mbah’s commitment to ensuring that the state filled its quota, describing the military as a noble and highly respected profession across the world.
On his part, the Chairman of the Enugu State chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, ALGON, Hon. Okechukwu Edeh, pledged even stronger cooperation of the Local Government Council, but called on the military high command to equally address any concerns of the people to make the service more appealing to the youths.
Also speaking, the State Coordinator, Presidents-General of Enugu State Town Unions, Hon. Arinze Ogbodo; former Chairman, Enugu State Traditional Rulers Council, Ambassador Lawrence Agubuzu and the traditional ruler of Nomeh Unataeze, Lieutenant Colonel Israel Mbah (rtd.), called on the youths to enlist in the Army, but stressed the need for more enlightenment.
“I was a military man before. I survived every war. I did mine and today I am a traditional ruler. So, I believe that our young people should join the force,” Mbah stated.

Approval rating is of pivotal importance in the re-election of an incumbent. Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, is enjoying an unprecedented universal approval rating as per the coming Anambra State gubernatorial election, billed for November 8, 2025.  Soludo’s stellar scorecard puts him out of sight ahead of any intending contender as the vote of confidence of Ndi Anambra across the globe has guaranteed.
The crème de la crème of Ndi Anambra within and outside the state have been reviewing the scorecard of Governor Soludo and have unanimously returned a resounding vote of confidence. It’s indeed remarkable that the principal figures in the opposition parties are not left out in the endorsement of the re-election of Governor Soludo. A typical example is the former Governor of Anambra State, former Senator and former Minister, Dr. Chris Nwabueze Ngige, who, in our local parlance, told Governor Soludo at the Abuja town-hall meeting: “Carry go!”
Dr. Ngige revealed that he had been begged by the remaining minuscule number of APC faithful in Anambra State not to endorse Governor Soludo. The irrepressible Dr. Ngige addressed Governor Soludo pointedly at the Abuja town-hall meeting by saying that he had gone to Anambra to see things for himself, thusly: “I came. I saw. But I did not conquer. I confirmed. Odenigbo, carry go!”
Before the Lagos and Abuja town-hall meetings where Governor Soludo went to present his scorecard to his people, pending the loading London town-hall meeting as well – there was an avalanche of endorsements by a wide range of organisations, from students, youths and scores of support groups.
This is beyond politics, as even students were among groups contributing money to persuade Governor Soludo to purchase the nomination form and contest the November election. The progressive governor, in tandem with the people’s will, graciously accepted to run, given the vote of confidence pouring in from all sides. It’s not in the constitution of Mr. Governor not to answer the call of the people.
The Lagos town-hall meeting came a day after the esteemed Vanguard Newspaper honoured Governor Soludo as the Vanguard Governor of the Year for Good Governance. The Lagos town-hall was a bang as the Habour Point Marquee Event Centre that got filled kept erupting intermittently with rapturous applauses as the gathered personages watched the 30-minute documentary. There was further uplifting exultation as Soludo took to the stage to talk about his stewardship in the last three years.
The following day, Sunday, the tireless Governor Soludo, who had been nicknamed “Ọlụatụegwu”, to wit, “One who is not afraid of duty”, was in Abuja, at the Bolton White Event Centre, for the Abuja version. Like in Lagos, Abuja was equally well-attended by Ndi Anambra who-is-who resident in the federal capital city. At the end of it all, the outcome matched that of Lagos, if not surpassing it, especially with the crowning glory of the endorsements of even opposition figures, including APC chieftains.
I recall a female commissioner asking us to rate the Lagos and Abuja town-halls and determine which was greater. It was quite a difficult task as most of us could not agree. Both were epochal indeed, but differing in their uniqueness: Lagos town-hall was massively attended by the business class and captains of industry, while Abuja town-hall was mainly attended by the political class.
With Abuja and Lagos adding their voices to the endorsement galore – and that of the UK positively loading – Governor Soludo’s re-election stays quite certain. It can be safely deduced that there is no coherent and viable opposition for Governor Soludo in Anambra State, as had been earlier stated by the Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, who, like Dr. Ngige, is a prominent APC leader.
Ndi Anambra at home and abroad are telling the opposition candidates seeking to take over the government in Anambra to tarry till 2029. With their resounding vote of confidence on the performing Solution Government of Governor Soludo, Anambra people have handed a fresh mandate in advance, to be validated on November 8.
The vote of confidence from home and abroad is a clear way of saying again and again: there is no vacancy in Awka Government House.  However, there is still history to be made in this November 8 guber election if the feeble contenders and pretenders step down for Soludo to run unopposed.
Governor Soludo grandly deserves his occupation of Obi-Ndi-Anambra, the Government House and Lodge he built to break a 34-year-old jinx. So, if the guber runners decide to go the whole hog with Prof Soludo, the performing governor should also go the entire length: win in the 5700 polling units, 326 wards and in the entire 21 local governments. It is within reach.
A word, they say, is enough for the wise, for as the Americans say, if it is not broken, why mend it?

Easter: Anambra Targets Zero Crime As Security Agents Launch ‘Operation Udo Ga-Achị

In a bid to ensure a crime-free Easter celebration, security agencies in Anambra State have officially launched Operation Udo Ga Achi – Zero Kidnapping and Other Violent Crimes  at Amawbia Flyover, Awka.
The joint security team comprising the Police, the military, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Department of State Services (DSS), National Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Nigeria Immigration Services (NIS), Nigerian Correctional Service and Agunaechemba (local vigilante) will focus on combing criminal flashpoints and hotspots using intelligence-driven methods.
Speaking at the event, Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikiooye Orutugu explained that the initiative will feature stop-and-search operations, targeted patrols by joint security teams, and strategically deployed operatives with Armoured Personnel Carriers on standby to respond swiftly to any security breaches.
“This strategic move is aimed at dislodging criminal elements. It will also assist the security agencies to stay ahead of criminal threats and reinforce public confidence, as well as ensuring the continued safety and security of all residents. The security forces are now more motivated, as the operation will give them a more coordinated approach to reclaiming the public space.
“It will also serve as a daily brief to always restrategize as the operation unfolds. We have a joint security information room for Anambra residents to report any suspicious activity. The numbers are: police – 07039194332, NDLEA – 09136832679, NSDC – 08066769442, FRSC – 122, Anambra State Vigilantes – 511 and 122, and Others we shall provide as the Operations commence,” he said.
The CP appealed to Anambra residents to support the success of “Operation Udo Ga-AChi” by volunteering information.
 He emphasized that public cooperation would be crucial in ensuring a peaceful and crime-free Easter celebration, even as he warned that any security personnel found wanting in their duties would face disciplinary action.
Th CP further appreciated the state government and some generous Ndị Anambra for repairing some of their operational vehicles and armoured personnel carriers.

In his opening speech at IIA’s  Ikoyi office, Lagos, the association’s Chief Executive Officer – Mr Ambrose Enuma said gone were the days when Internal Auditors would shun visibility and remain silent achievers.  Going forward, he said IIA would ensure that members are better valued because of the significance their roles, just as the Institute would provide sustained capacity building opportunities.
According to the CEO: ” We are not  just concerned with the financials, but do a lot more. We give assurance and support organizations to achieve their objectives. We also identify risks, do risk control and ensure compliance to procedure”.
He added that the September conference, with the Theme: ” Living the Future: Fusing Tech and Ethics” provides a unique capacity building opportunity which should not be missed by  professionals and other
stakeholders, especially Internal Auditors.
Also speaking at the unveiling, IIA’s President and Chairman – Mr Simon – Jude Mmayie stressed that Internal Auditors elevate the importance of doing things right. In his words ” Both in the Public and Private sectors, what IIA stands for is providing an assurance to the board and providing insight and foresight that are advisory and consulting in nature”.
He added: “As Internal Auditors, we share your vision, identify what can aid it’s achievement, what can hinder it, and provide advice for enhanced value.
To us, getting to the end doesn’t matter unless the right process is followed”.
To a Director of the Institute – Mr Don Umeha- ” The Corporate world relies so much on us. That’s why we are increasing public awareness and members’ empowerment. So, as we are having our yearly conference in September, we also have another one in May”.
The September 2025 Conference Chairperson – Mrs Bunmi Akinde- said the conference would enable all participants to evaluate their roles currently and appreciate what the future holds.
According to her, “Like the Theme clearly stated, the only way an Internal Auditor can continue to function well is to fully understand the need for the impact of technology and compliance with ethics with the future in view. That is why this conference is a must event to Internal Auditors, and hence the need to ensure necessary awareness “.

Ondo Exploring Opportunities To Leverage Pension Funds For Infrastructural Development — Gov Aiyedatiwa

 

 

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has said that Ondo State is exploring opportunities to leverage pension funds for infrastructural development in the state. The Governor made the revelation on Tuesday, 15 April 2025 when he received a delegation from the National Pension Commission (PenCom) led by the Director General, Ms. Omolola Oloworaran in Akure.

 

PenCom delegation visited the Governor to discuss critical pension reforms aimed at improving welfare for retirees and ensuring compliance with the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).

 

Speaking during the visit, Governor Aiyedatiwa extolled the critical role of pension funds in economic development and commended PenCom for its proactive engagement. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the full implementation of the CPS in Ondo State.

 

The Ondo State Pension Commission (OSPEC) scored 72.44% in state pension compliance during the last Routine Inspection carried out by PenCom. The Governor expressed his aspiration to improve the State’s pension compliance rating from its current composite score of 72.44% to 95% by the next Inspection as challenged by the PenCom DG.

 

Also speaking, the PenCom DG proposed key amendments to the Ondo State Pension Law, including the introduction of a Minimum Pension Guarantee (MPG) to support indigent contributors and an Irrevocable Standing Payment Order (ISPO) to ensure consistent remittances by successive administrations.

 

Ms. Oloworaran also advocated for the integration of a Pension Compliance Certificate (PCC) as a mandatory requirement for business licensing, registration renewals, and contract awards within the State. This measure aims to enhance compliance and accountability in pension remittances by employers.

 

Additionally, the PenCom DG raised concerns identified during OSPEC’s last Routine Inspection, urging prompt resolution to improve the State’s pension compliance rating. Governor Aiyedatiwa promised that the state would address most of the concerns before the next inspection.

SNEPCo Named Major Oil Company Of The Year, As Former MD Elohor Aiboni Is Amazon Of Nigeria’s Oil Sector

Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCo) has been named Major Oil Company of the Year for last year by a Nigerian publication, Energy Times in recognition of its contributions to deep-water oil and gas development and the industry generally. Energy Times also awarded the title of Amazon of Nigeria’s Oil Sector for 2024 to Mrs. Elohor Aiboni, a former Managing Director of SNEPCo now on international assignment in Brunei.

 

The awards were presented to SNEPCo’s Senior Operations Manager, Bolanle Odunayo-Ojo, who represented the Managing Director, Ronald Adams at a ceremony attended by key stakeholders in the oil and gas sector. “We are honored to receive the recognitions for the company and our former Managing Director as they underscore our dedication to excellence in the upstream sector,” Bolanle stated. “The modest achievements are result from teamwork and support by our partners, particularly the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited and regulatory agencies. The awards encourage us to continue to work together to power progress and innovation in Nigeria’s energy landscape.”

 

SNEPCo has been a pioneer in Nigeria’s deep-water oil and gas production since it began production from Bonga in 2005, Nigeria’s first deep-water well. Gas from Bonga is also piped to Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Company Limited at Bonny Island. SNEPCo’s operations have led to significant discoveries, including Bonga Southwest in 2001 and Bonga Northwest, which began production on August 5, 2014.

 

In its award, the Board of Directors of Energy Times pointed to the continuing success of Bonga, notably production of the 1 billionth barrel of oil in February 2023 and the recent Final Investment Decision on the $5 billion Bonga North project.

 

The award on Mrs. Aiboni’s highlights a career that has seen her serve in various business and leadership roles within and outside Nigeria. She was appointed Managing Director of SNEPCo in 2021 and led initiatives that deepened operational efficiency, local content development and social investment projects across the six geopolitical zones in the country.

Anambra State Government has called on nonindeges to help curb insecurity in the state by flushing out the bad eggs among them.
The state’s Commissioner for Information, Dr Law Mefor, made the call while addressing members of the Association of Non Indigenes Welfare in Anambra State (ANISA-ANIAS), who paid him a courtesy visit at his office in Awka, recently.
The commissioner, who observed that non-indegenes have contributed meaningfully to the growth of the state, noted that they have equally benefited from Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo’s inclusive governance in various areas, including security, employment, infrastructure, healthcare, education and youth empowerment, among others.
He however, explained that available data show that majority of the criminals apprehended in the state are nonindigenes, urging members of the association to do their best in supporting Governor  Soludo’s security interventions to rid the state of criminals in order to redeem their image.
“The issue security is very important. Put it in your agenda. I am telling you that available data is showing that the majority of the criminals we got are nonindigenes. They are spoiling the names of those of you doing genuine businesses.
“We have to come together, work together with the Governor to ensure that the bad eggs leave or change their ways. We have the 1Youth 2Skills and the Solution Innovation District (SID). The Governor has trained more than 30,000 people, settled and empowered them. Any of them that wants something to do should come. I can use my office to place him somewhere in SID. Criminality is bad,” he said.
Mefor further assured that the ministry is willing to partner with them in promoting the good works of the government.
In their separate speeches, the President General, ANISA-ANIAS, Chief Ikechukwu Ugwuoke, and the traditional leader of Non-Indegenes Welfare in Anambra State, Igwe Amos Nkwuda, said the visit was to commend and allign themselves with the visionary leadership of Governor Soludo and also felicitate the commissioner on his 60th birthday, even as they pledged their support to the Governor’s re-election bid.

Youths’ Early Adoption of Insurance, Digital Payments, Investment Builds Financial Future

In today’s rapidly evolving economic landscape, the pivotal role of youth in shaping the future of financial systems cannot be overstated. At the 2025 Finance and Business Online Publishers Association (FiBOP) Youth Capacity and Empowerment Programme held Tuesday April 15, 2025 in Lagos, industry experts from the Insurance, Telecommunication, and Banking sectors convened to address the pressing need for early engagement of young individuals in essential financial practices. They emphasized that adopting insurance, digital payments, and investment strategies at a young age is not just beneficial but vital for equipping the next generation with the tools necessary for effective leadership and responsible financial stewardship.

While making opening remarks at the event which took place at Muson Centre, Onikan, Lagos with the theme  “Empowering Nigerian Youths with Knowledge of Insurance, Digital Payment and Investment To Drive Financial Inclusion,” FiBOB President, Charles Onwuatogwu, highlighted the rationale behind the programme.

He said the programme was geared towards building the capacity of the youths to enable them navigate the future financial landscape and be able to contribute meaningfully to the growth and development of the Nigerian and African economy, as well as take charge of their finances both now and in future.

The theme of this program, he said, was painstakingly chosen to address the knowledge gap in insurance and digital payment in Nigeria.

“As the financial sector becomes more dynamic, a better understanding of the sector will aid speedy growth and development, particularly insurance, which, despite its importance, is grossly misunderstood; hence the need to expose the youths to the basic elements of playing in this field early in life.

“The importance of digital innovation in fostering a better understanding of insurance and its transformative power cannot be overemphasised.

“As we gather to discuss financial inclusion, via harnessing insurance, digital payment and investment, I urge you, our esteemed participants, to pay rapt attention to the lectures to follow the speakers,” Mr. Onwuatogwu said.

The keynote speaker, Miss Mojisola Ogundipe, presented the theme paper titled “Empowering Nigerian Youths with Knowledge of Insurance, Digital Payment, and Investment to Drive Financial Inclusion.” She emphasized the crucial need for young people to understand insurance, digital payment systems, and investment strategies

Speaking on insurance, Mojisola defined insurance as a system of protection against financial loss, which provides help during accidents, illness, or disasters.

She explained the basic terms in insurance, such as Policy, Coverage, Claim,  Beneficiary and Premium.

Policy: A contract between the insured (you) and the insurance company, outlining the terms and conditions of coverage.

Claim: A request made to the insurance company for payment or compensation when a covered event occurs (e.g., accident, illness).

Beneficiary: The person or entity designated to receive the insurance payout in the event of a claim (often applicable to life insurance).

The Premium: The amount of money paid to an insurance company to maintain protection provided by the insurance policy, specifying what is included and excluded from the policy.

Mijisola listed types of insurance to include Life Insurance, Health Insurance, Vehicle Insurance, Educational Insurance as well as Home Insurance, noting that each type of insurance serves a specific purpose, helping individuals and families manage risk and financial uncertainty.

Life Insurance: Provides financial protection for loved ones in the event of the policyholder’s death, often including a payout to beneficiaries.

Health Insurance: Covers medical expenses incurred due to illness, injury, or disease, helping policyholders manage healthcare costs.

Vehicle Insurance: Protects vehicle owners against financial losses due to accidents, theft, or damage to their vehicle.

Education Insurance: Designed to help fund education expenses, often providing a payout when a child reaches a certain age or milestone.

Home Insurance: Covers damage or loss to a home and its contents due to events like natural disasters, theft, or accidents.

On Digital Payment, she described it as the future of money, noting that it is the process of paying or receiving money using phones, cards, or computers—no cash needed.

Mojisola listed some common digital payment methods as Mobile wallets (e.g., Google Pay, Apple Pay, PayPal), Bank apps, Debit/Credit Cards and Quick Response (QR) Codes & Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in some countries.

Speaking on Investment, she said it is putting money into something to earn more over time.

According to her, types of investments include Savings Accounts, Fixed Deposits, Insurance, Mutual Funds, Stocks, and Cryptocurrency, which she said is highly risky.

Underscoring the importance of insurance, digital payments, and investment, Mojisola noted that “Insurance protects your life and assets. Digital payments are the new normal…Investments are for your future….”
