Dedicated to improving health delivery through innovative solution across Nigeria and Africa , efferentCARES Initiative in partnership with Maternal and Childcare Centre Amuwo Odofin Festac provided free Cervical cancer screening to women at Amuwo Odofin and its environs.

The three day cervical cancer screening and treatment program took place at the Maternal and Childcare Centre , Amuwo Odofin Festac , Lagos.

Cervical cancer is the second most common type of cancer for women worldwide, but because it develops over time, it is also one of the most preventable types of cancer.

In Nigeria , health experts observed that 26 Nigerian women die daily as a result of cervical cancer. 14,089 new cases are diagnosed annually and 64% of those women die as a result of late detection.

Hence , At efferentCARES  , the Founder and CEO of Efferent Services Limited Ezinne Anyanwu ,  explained that their goal was to make sure that the number of women who die each year as a result of late detection is reduced .

“This is our first journey of reaching out to women as regards screening on cervical cancer. And we will not relent so therefore we seek the support of government ,  non governmental and corporate bodies in this fight. And to women please remember there is no harm in getting screened, instead there is pain when detected late.”

Using the latest innovative technology the Enhanced Visual Assessment (EVA) device a powerful tool for visualizing the cervix efferentCARES  coordinated screening and treatment services for many women.

The EVA system looks like a handheld scanner and comprises a mobile colposcope with a smartphone mounted on it. It also has an online image portal for storing and annotating images.

The device uses an app that stores patients’ details on the mobile phone. During screening, the device captures and uploads images of the cervix to the image portal.

A patient is able to view the image of her cervix as the nurse explains the results. If abnormalities in cervical cells are detected, the health provider is at discretion to either treat or refer to a specialist. Information on diagnoses and treatments including other clinical decisions about a patient are stored in the device, hence making it double as a health record. This can also be shared in real-time with specialists or referral facilities.
