Crisis brews in NOC, PRO chide SG

No Comments Share:
The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), Phemmy Adetula has condemned the administrative style of the Secretary General, Olabanji Oladapo.
In a memo to the board of the committee, Adetula cried out for what he termed as injustice and maltreatment meted on me by Oladapo.
“Dear Exco Members, I have been carrying out my tasks with a heavy and burdened heart silently since I resumed work at NOC because of the injustice and maltreatment meted on me with the administrative style of the Secretary General, Mr Olabanji Oladapo.
“The SG has totally submerged my unit and usurped all the activities of the office of the PRO and I think I should speak out now than die in silence, so that everybody’s responsibilities will be spelt out before the next administration comes in no matter who will be occupying the position.
“I believe strongly that this will be the greatest contribution I would have made as a patriot to the Olympic movement in Nigeria,’’ Adetula said.
The PRO complained about the SG refusal to approve the setting up of PR Unit for the committee.
“When we resumed, I did a proposal to the SG to set up a proper PR Unit for the NOC which will be a focal point for every PRO that resumes subsequently. I requested that we (NOC) have our own Camera chains both still and video with an operator who will double as Camera man and Video editor.
“I further explained that with the volume of what we will roll out, after a while, the NOC will be making money from these visuals,’’ he said
Adetula also said that Oladapo declined him setting up the body’s website.
“The SG single handedly built a website for the NOC without any input from my Unit with my intellectual property and rights’ littering the website, but the President in his wisdom called me to work with the webmaster to correct all the anomalies on the site.
“And it will interest my colleagues that I don’t have powers over the website because the officer handling it listens more to the SG on the content to be used on the site ignoring most of the materials sent by the PRO.
“Every publication from my Unit has been seen in a bad light even with the one the SG gave approval for publishing,’’ he said.
Adetula said that Oladapo unduly favour Debo Oshundun, Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) Chairman Lagos Chapter in travelling for international events and NOC programmes.
“The SG decides the Media men that travel for NOC events even without a recourse to my office.
“ For example, Debo Oshundun was taken to Morrocco in 2019, the same Debo Oshundun to Bayelsa State for NOC Olympic Day Run and yet again, the same man for the NOC AGM in Bayelsa.
“This man has not written, published or broadcast a single story for NOC,  but the SG has neglected the pressmen that help us day and night even with short notices, I ask, is this not injustice?.’’
The NOC PRO also said that SG was sidelining him in the media accreditation of the forthcoming Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, United Kingdom and gave Oshundun, whom he described as Oladapo’s boy.
“Also, the SG has told the Nigerian Media Men to report to his office for the Media Accreditation to Birmingham Commonwealth Games.
“I did a little write up to his office to monitor and control by going through their professional body, SWAN, bearing in mind, what happened to Ghana at the Gold Coast Airport when Australia hosted the games.
“The Ghanaian nation was disgraced because of the shenanigans of the media men. The SG has given the same Debo Oshundun, who is not a card carrying member of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) and who he has anointed to take over from me as the next Public Relations Officer to recruit reporters that will travel with him to the games throwing away all the laid down plans I have submitted and approved by himself, the SG of the NOC.
“These and many more I have been facing in the line of duty.
“I want to humbly inform my dearest colleagues that I am displeased about this latest action of the NOC SG and I refuse it in totality. I plead you look into it before I go public because his boy, Debo Oshundun has petitioned me and wrote all sorts about me with the support of the SG in the Nigeria media space,’’ he said.
